Analysis of the Costs and Impact of Universal Health Care Models for
the State of Maryland: The Single-Payer and Multi-Payer Models

The Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative, now the largest coalition ever amassed in Maryland, released two studies showing that universal health care reforms are economically viable for our state.  The Lewin Group, a renowned, independent research company, was commissioned to study two alternative methods for giving all Marylanders access to comprehensive health insurance coverage. Lewin found that a "single payer" approach saved Maryland's health care system an overall $345.8 million and an alternative "multi-payer" system cost the state just $207 (or 1.1% of Maryland's total health care budget) million to implement.  Over the next year, the coalition will discuss these studies with our member groups and develop a plan to guarantee all Marylanders health insurance.

The report provides a fiscal analysis of universal health care for Maryland. This landmark study is now available on our website. The report is available in two formats (HTML and PDF). An executive summary is available for a quick look at the report results.
